Love me tender – New BF soft plastic Review

With the upcoming eastern front release by battlefront there will be new plastic infantry and I am really looking forward to these. But, beeing a while out of the hobby, I remembered that Battlefront is using a new type of plastic for its infantry miniatures. The last I heard about these was the lack of details on these miniatures, specially on the faces. And you can see that on pictures of the first models of that type. So I ordered myself the British Motor Rifle Platoon to take a look at the new soft plastic.
The miniatures are on a small single sprue and not on a huge frame like the old ones as you might see below. That make them easy to remove, you don’t even need any tools for that.

Let’s take a closer look on the miniatures and compare them to older ones.

On the left we have an old British Late War Infantry man, center the new soft plastic and on the right the old hard plastic Germans. First of all I want to talk about how the cleaning is. The new ones are casted finely and you don’t have to clean much. There are some flashes and mould lines which look easy to clean but the new plastic is really too soft, so it takes some time. I really recommend to clean them with a knife first. It is hard to remove flashes on thin areas like the rifle.

After that you might need a fine file to remove the mouldlines and the remains from your knife cleaning. You should use a diamond file and not a regular one as I did.

All in all I have to say that the flashes and mouldlines are so small that you could paint the tiny soldier without cleaning it at all. Unthinkable on the old tin miniatures. The hard plastic is easier to clean but you have to do more cleaning because of the remains from the casting frame. So when it comes to cleaning I prefer the old hard plastic.

One of the reason why Battlfront changed to the brighter soft plastic was that you could get more details on the side of an infantry figure. On the pictures above you can see that clearly and that is a good point for a new type of material. The details are good, better than on the old tin ones but not as good as the hard plastic. For example if I compare the MP40 and the Thompson gun, the MP 40 got more fine details than the British gun and the rifle sling is thinner and looks better on the German gun (You can see the huge sling and the lack of details on the Thompson below). Battlefront says that they get the same quality as on the hard plastic but for some reason they don’t do it. But may be that is more a problem of design than of the manufacturing process. Nevertheless I have to say that the differences are small and you can buy that British Motor Rifle Platoon without any worries. They are still good figures.

Let’s talk about the paintjob. I primed the miniature without any preparation. Usually I would put them into warm water with some dishwasher to remove any dirt and fat but I wanted to try it without. After the primer got dry I scratched a little and bent the rifle a bit to see how good the primer would stay on the miniature. I was quite suprised to see that the color didn’t break. So I painted a few parts, which worked great. Then I touched the miniatures a few times like you would during game play and I really dropped a heavy rulebook (shadowrun 5 if you want to know) on it. Well I tested it the hardcore way, which would never happen on the table (I guess). The legs were nearly broken and the helmet got a huge black scratch but it was still one piece. You don’t have to worry that something will happen to these if you are careful as usual, they are really battle proven. Also the paint didn’t break at all. That is definitely somthing were I would prefer the flexible plastic over the other two materials.

So what is my conclusion? The new flexible plastic miniatures are a solid product. It isn’t perfect but Battlefront is on a good way to produce great infantry miniatures. I am looking forward to the new German and Russian infantry models and I am less worried now that I saw the Motor Rifle Platoon.
What do you think about the new felxible plastic?
