To be honest, I feel a bit nostalgic when I look at the new Leopard 2 tank from Battlefront. When I was a little kid I played with a lot of little toy tanks. Some of them were historical (like a Sherman tank from micro machines) and a few were fictional. But no other tank has been stuck in my mind like the Leopard 2. This miniature wasn’t even a toy, but a real miniature model – it was Krauss Maffei merchandise. A plastic tank behind thick glas. I could only look at it but that was enough for me because of the great details; therefore it had been standing on my desk for quite a long time. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I was looking forward to the release of “Leopard” and the new miniatures, moreover Battlefront did a great Job on them.

Solche “Unfälle” sucht man hier vergeblich.

Let’s take a closer look at the miniatures. The tank in front of you is the Leopard 2A4: the most widespread version of the Leopard 2. Wikipedia has a great article with lots of information about this tank so I skip all that. This miniature just needs one sprue, which is really well made. The feed points are small, like in the BMP kit, and everything is easy to remove. Thanks to that you just have to clean a few parts. The biggest issue here is the huge mouldline on the turrent, which may take you a while to clean.
As you might see, the kit comes without any option to build another version of the tank like the M1, where you can also build the M1A1. Talking about the assembling, the Leo is easy to build and you also get a few stowage parts. The MG3 looks a little bit chunky with a too short barrel. You may consider to use an older MG42 to replace it, because there is no difference between those two MGs from the outside.
I think that the nice and finely casted details on this tank are even better than those on the M1 and the T-72. Some of you may remember the smoke launchers of the russian tank – , most of them break in the sprue. You won’t find anything like that in this kit. Nevertheless, the smoke launchers of the Leopard are counted among the flaws of it as they are attached to a plate, which looks kind of weird thanks to the ugly infill; at least you won’t realize their awkward look that much when the tank is painted. The good thing about  these smoke launchers is that you won’t have any problems while glueing them on. Another downside is that you are unable to model an open loader hatch.

All in all this kit is great and the weak points are just nitpicks and most people won’t even realize them. We have to keep in mind that this is a gaming model and not a display model. I guess that more details could be annoying for some gamers. As I already mentioned, in my eyes the Leopard looks better than the T-72 and M1 Kit and is the best kit after the BMP!

The Leopard 2 is not as wide as M1 if you compare both tanks. It is 37mm wide, around 80mm long and 27mm high; without the MG.

Additionally to the Leopards you get two BO-105P Helicopters, which are there to kill tanks. They have the same pros as the Leopard tank: they have small feedpoints and are easy to clean and assemble because the parts fit together perfectly. The main and the tail-rotor look a bit difficult to get out of the sprue, but don’t worry, it was quite easy. Battlefront added two tail-rotors, which makes it really safe. I guess it is wise to add the Weapons at the end of the paintjob, because it would be hard to paint the fuselage when they are already attached.

At first glance I was impressed by the quality of the tank commanders – until I got them out of the little plastic bag. They are better than the american ones, but still flashy. Again Battlefront used a softer white resin to cast them, which is okay for those small soldiers. The six poses are nice and it will be fun to paint them.

Leopard Unitcards

The decalsheet provides you with everything you need: German Crosses, tanknumbers, numberplates and bridge weight numbers. The numberplates look a bit incorrect, but I guess this was inevitable due to it’s format. I see a more crucial problem in the size of the plates as it might be a problem to place the correct plate on the Leopards rear – but I haven’t found out yet.
Inside the box you will find all the Unitcards you need to field these miniatures. The “division”-card shows you the three companies you can field on the front and on the back you can find the support units. For some reason, Battlefront shows the cards with real life pictures of the tanks instead of the miniatures on their website. That would be a huge break and I am glad they didn’t do it.

Overall Kampfgruppe Müller is a good start, but won’t be necessary to buy it after the release of the single boxes for the Leopard 2 and the PAH. I am missing some nice goodies or a discount. The cardboard template is nice and useful but it is not special enough to make me buy the armybox instead of the single tank boxes.
That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more Leopard content!
